Team Jägerbug
The faces behind the racers
Alex Bruce aka The VW Messiah ~ Team Leader
Alex is the brain behind the entire Jägerbug project! Having had an interest in all things VW, seemingly since birth, the one vehicle missing from Alex's vast collection of VW's was a racecar. Jägerbug HQ is based at Alex & Naomi's house in Lincoln. Thanks to an incredible collection of tools and parts, the build of the race car took place in his sizeable garage. Without doubt one of the main brains behind the project, Alex has performed the majority of the welding and fabrication on the bodywork as well as almost single handedly building and refining the original 1914cc engine.
Talk about commitment to the cause, Alex lost over 3 stones in weight for the start of the 2008 race season to help lower his times on the strip and of course so that he could actually fit into the drivers seat! A consistent driver, Alex has proven hard to beat and took top driving honours amongst Team Jägerbug at several shows in both 2008 & 2009
- Quickest time of 2008 a 15.33 second pass at VW Action.
- Quickest time of 2009 a 14.90 second pass at VW Action
Naomi Bruce aka Nay ~ Team Organisation
Behind every great man.... Nay single handedly keeps Team Jägerbug on the straight and narrow! The trips to Europe would not run so smoothly were it not for Nay's superb logistical arrangement skills. A dab hand with a needle and thread too, check out the work of art that is the headlining & seat covers inside the Jägerbug.
Yet to be coaxed into the drivers seat, it is ony a matter of time before Nay is responsible for Captain Slow's 1st nervous breakdown when he becomes 'even slower than a girl'. The woman behind the Jägerparty's, so succesfully attended in 2008. Nay has ran the merchandise side of things in Team Jägerbug right from the outset. If you want a Jägerbug t-shirt, she's the one to speak to!
- Yet to race, watch this space......
Nick Pugh aka Pughdog ~ Team Reporter
Pughdog had little or no technical knowledge when it came to actually building a race car but was reguarly found with a grinder in hand, covered in muck, during the build of the Jägerbug. Undertaker of most of the 'messy' jobs, what Nick lacks in mechanical knowledge he makes up for in effort and whiney complaining. The face behind the Ultra VW magazine articles, it has been rumoured that Nick infact ghostwrites many of todays best selling novels worldwide.
2009 saw Nick leave the U.K. to live in Malaysia but not before racing at Big Bang, EBI 3 and BugJam. Singlehandedly educating the entire Asian area about the Jägerbug has been time consuming but rumours are circling that he may even fly back in 2010 to get behind the wheel once more to attempt to regain the cherished JägerStig crown. - Quickest time of 2009 a 15.02 second pass at EBI 3
Richard Bacon aka The Jägerstig ~ Team Text messager
Baron Von Bacon brings a vast knowledge of all things motorsport to the team. Possibly the only other member of Team Jägerbug that actually understands what Alex is talking about half the time, Rich has been vital in helping refine the Jägerbug's performance throughout the 2008 season. A self confessed speed addict, it was no surprise to see The Baron quickest driver on the Jägerbug's first outing at Big Bang in 2008.
An avid Red Bull drinker, Rich has undergone a gruelling non-stop exercise regime that has seen him exercise his thumbs whilst texting beyond the levels previously thought humanly possible. Allegedly, Richs' thumbs are now so strong and nimble it assists gear changing / steering and he was recently spotted training for the Worlds Strongest Thumb competition.
Rich has stamped his authority down again in 2009 running the quickest time at Big Bang, the rest of the team put this down to his 'jet lag' early nights whilst the others drank into the wee hours!
- Quickest time of 2008 a 15.99 second pass at Bug Jam
- Quickest time of 2009 a 15.72 second pass at Big Bang
Graeme Kennett aka The Ice Man ~ Team Spanner Jockey
Graeme worked tirelessly right from the outset of the Jägerbug project. However, throughout 2008 remained absent from the driving seat at race weekends. Finally at Big Bang 2009 The Ice Man (so named due to his super cool performance behind the wheel) joined the racing club. An admirable performance saw Graeme improve his times throughout the day to set his new pb behind the wheel. He triumphed in the 'Battle of the Newbies' squeezing Martin out by less than 5 hundredths of a second!
A keen collecter of Beetle project vehicles, Graeme is said to 'learning his trade' with Team Jägerbug so that he can create a fleet of super beetles for him, son Isaac and daughter Elise. The big question for 2009 is will Dad be able to beat his son if Isaac gets behind the wheel of the orange peril?
- Quickest time of 2009 a 15.51 second pass at VW Action
Rich Storey aka GT Rich / Captain Slow ~ Team Comedian
Captain Slow, as Rich has affectionately become known, is always consulted before any major technical decisions are made on the Jägerbug project. Rich's knowledge of Volkswagen parts and engine performance is beyond comprehension. It has been rumoured that the Haynes manual VW owners turn to at their moment of need was infact his brain child and he wrote it whilst sat on the toilet. Mrs Slow complains that he reguarly recites VW part numbers in his sleep!
The arrival of the Storey family's beautiful baby daughter limited the Captains appearances on the drag strip in 2008. In his one outing of the year at Big Bang, Rich very graciously allowed everyone else to go quicker, a mark of the mans generosity! A dedicated Jägerbug clothing collecter, it is said that his house can be seen from space due to the orange glow emminating from his wardrobe!
- Quickest time of 2008 a 18.61 second pass at Big Bang.
Paul Bratley aka Midge ~ Team Vinyl Expert
Paul is the Team Jägerbug member that really likes to get his hands dirty! The man responsible for all the measuring and research undertaken to chop the roof off the Jägerbug. Technically I think that was only right as the roof was crushed by a large tree collapsing onto the unfortunate bug in his back garden! The only member of the team who still manages to pronounce Jägerbug incorrectly.
Another team member yet to make an appearance on the strip, Paul's wife Sharon supplies most of the cakes and biscuits needed to keep the team running throughout the night whilst working on the car! A vinyl expert by day, he is behind the Jägerbug's fine looking livery and all of the printing of the Team Jägerbug clothing.
Martin Henson aka Da Management ~ Team Security
A late arrival to Team Jägerbug, Martin (and family) have been valuable additions to the team. The 'big softie' has firmly concreted his place in Jägerbug history with the introduction of 'Werthers Vodka', earlier in the year at one of the Fl4tlanders beach BBQs. The drink is no doubt responsible for much of the season being a blur and many team members sickness and hungover state in the morning at shows. Martin is the sales force of Team Jägerbug, he has been known to quite literally sell sand to Arabs and ice to Eskimos. If you are reading this and do not yet own an item of Jägerbug clothing, it's just a matter of time before Martin finds you....
Desperately unlucky not to make his racing debut at Flame & Thunder in 2008 due to rain, Martin had to wait nearly 6 months longer before he could finally get behind the wheel at Big Bang 2009.
- Quickest time of 2009 a 16.07 second pass at Big Bang
Ashley Marshall aka The Darkhorse ~ Team Pretty Boy
Ash did his fair share of the donkey work early on in the project, helping with the horrible jobs like the grinding of the floorpan and stripping of the bodywork. Unfortunately, due to work commitments he missed the fun bits towards the end where we actually put the Jägerbug back together!
Unsure whether he'd 'earned his stripes' he tentatively enquired if he could have a go on the strip at Bug Jam 2008. I think it is fair to say he was a very quick learner! With just 2 passes under his belt he kept up with the pace of the more experienced drivers right from the off. Who knows if this closet racer will make it back onto the strip in 09 to improve his times. Rumours that he and Sarah are starting up an animal shelter at home are believed to be wildly exaggerated.
- Quickest time of 2008 a 16.29 second pass at Bug Jam
Rob Evans aka Sparky ~ Team sparkplug changer
The latest addition to the team, Rob will be making his racing debut at the Big Bang festival in 2009. More used to driving his splitscreen pickup around the roads of Lincolnshire, how will the new boy perform and where will he fit into the pecking order? More importantly, will he win the battle of the Seamen with Martin? Oo er missus!
Yet to be introduced to the teams favourite tipple of Jägermeister and werthers vodka shots perhaps the only thing that will hinder Rob's progress will be the inevitable hangover he will feel on the Saturday morning at shows!
Watch this space for race results very soon......
Fl4tlanders VW Club aka "one of the most active VW Clubs in the UK" - Ultra VW
There are other members of the Fl4tlanders VW club, many have helped out in times of need and all support the Jägerbug project reguarly. Paul Birch, Pete, Gareth, Frosty, Brian, Carolyn, Abby, Jake & Ellie, Jaqui & Oscar, Isaac & Elise, Kev, to name but a few.
New faces are being added to the team all the time. With an increase in the number of drivers, surely it's only a matter of time before a second Jäger themed race car will be built......
